Open Source Web Mapping Tools, Neogeography, and Other Explorations
Jon Caris, GIS Specialist and Coordinator for the Spatial Analysis Lab at Smith College
Monday July 14, 10:00 – 12:00, West Springfield, MA, Town Hall

Jon will share his current thinking and research on incorporating open source geospatial tools (GeoServer, QGIS,  PostGIS, and OpenLayers) into the liberal arts education.  This potential departure from using proprietary systems presents both opportunities and implications for our students and the workforce.
Neogeography is another driving force behind this change and although not necessarily open source, it does incorporate many of the same ideals, methods, and models that are transforming our educational landscape.  Attendees can anticipate an interactive session in which they are asked to reflect on their own education and professional development and to articulate their thoughts on the changing geospatial landscape.
